How does Dubrovnik Airport car hire work?
Most of the cars wait at the airport itself, at the start of the drive from the airport to the Old Town, which the airport puts at 30 to 35 minutes, and that is where the pick-up at Dubrovnik Airport happens. The rest come as city-delivery cars, with the delivery cost shown on the car, or from a second Dubrovnik pick-up place.
Every car in the search shows its conditions before you pay: whether there is a deposit and how much (some cars have none), whether the company needs a credit card or accepts a debit card, whether the booking can be cancelled free of charge, the gearbox, the number of seats and any daily kilometre limit. Manual and automatic cars are both listed, from four-seat city cars to nine-seat vans.
After you book, your rental voucher gives the meeting place, how to pay the rest of the hire and, where there is a deposit, when it comes back.
Before you book
Check the licence, payment card and deposit requirements, plus your drop-off plans, before choosing your car.
Licence
A valid national licence with the details in Latin script, expiring no earlier than the end of the hire. No copies, no electronic licences.
Card
Some cars need a physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name; the car says so before you book.
Deposit
Set per car, zero on some, and shown before payment. Some companies hold it for 30 to 45 days after the car comes back.
One-way
Cars from Dubrovnik come back to Split, Zagreb, Zadar and Pula on the cars that allow it.

Which documents do I need to hire a car in Dubrovnik?
A valid national driving licence with the details in Latin script, which must not expire before the hire ends. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. If your licence is valid only in the country that issued it, the terms strongly recommend carrying an International Driving Permit as well.
The payment card matters as much as the licence. Some cars need a physical, embossed credit card in the main driver's name. Where a company accepts a debit card, the car says so, and that card must also be physical, embossed and in the main driver's name. Bring the card you booked against to the pick-up.
Minimum age and years of driving experience are listed on each car and can differ between two similar models. A company may refuse the handover if the driver does not meet them.
Hire termsHow do the deposit and the standard cover work?
The booking process and your voucher show whether a deposit is taken, how, and when it comes back. Some companies keep it for 30 to 45 days after you return the car, and a traffic fine or an unpaid toll from your hire period that reaches them later is charged to that deposit, with an administration cost for fines. Standard insurance on a hire car in Croatia does not cover damage to the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior.

Can I drop the car somewhere else in Croatia?
Yes, on cars that allow it. Cars collected in Dubrovnik come back to Split, Zagreb, Zadar and Pula. Choose the drop-off in the second tab of the form and the search lists the cars that can end there. A one-way hire to Split crosses the Pelješac bridge and stays inside Croatia.
One-way hireHow far is it from the airport?
The airport says the drive into Dubrovnik averages 30 to 35 minutes and can take up to an hour in summer. The times below are routed from the airport's rent-a-car map point and rounded up; they leave out traffic, border checks and ferry queues.
The Old Town is inside a special traffic regime zone from 1 March to 30 November, and a hire car may enter only with a reserved parking space, registered accommodation parking or a hotel stay inside the zone. Without one, the Tourist Board advises parking outside the zone and taking a city bus in.

Where do I collect the car at Dubrovnik Airport?
Arrivals are in passenger terminal building B. The airport lists the rental companies working there and links one map point for them, labelled "Parking lot and drop off point". Your rental voucher gives the exact meeting place for your company, and it is the document to follow on the day.
Keep the phone number you gave at booking switched on from the day before pick-up until the car is back. The hire terms make that a condition, and the company uses it to reach you about the handover.
Airport pick-upHow are hire days and fuel counted?
The shortest chargeable hire is 24 hours. Collect on Monday morning and return on Tuesday afternoon and you pay for two days. To keep the car longer, tell the rental company in advance.
Fuel works like-for-like: return the car with the level you collected it at. If the tank is lower, you pay the difference at the company's rate; if it is higher, nothing is refunded. A car returned too dirty to inspect is cleaned at your cost.
Can I take the hire car to Montenegro, Bosnia or the islands?
Only with arrangements made before you travel. Leaving Croatia needs permission requested by email from the booking help desk, and its price and conditions depend on the length of the trip, the car and the rental company. Taking the car on a ferry between the mainland and an island also needs prior arrangement, requested before you complete the booking. Kotor is 58 km from the airport with the Kamenari ferry and Mostar 162 km, and both routes out of Dubrovnik Airport leave Croatia.

Car hire questions
Answers taken from the hire terms for Croatia and from the conditions listed on Dubrovnik cars.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to hire a car in Dubrovnik?
You need a valid national licence with details in Latin script. If that licence is valid only in the country that issued it, the terms strongly recommend an International Driving Permit alongside it, shown on request.
Can I hire a car in Dubrovnik with a debit card?
On some cars. Where a company accepts a debit card, the car and the voucher say so, and the card must be physical, embossed and in the main driver's name. Other cars need a credit card.
Is mileage unlimited?
It depends on the car. Some Dubrovnik listings state no limit and some carry a daily kilometre cap, shown on the car before you book.
Who pays for tolls, parking and fines?
You do. The terms make fuel, parking, fines and toll roads the renter's cost, and a fine or unpaid toll that reaches the company after the hire is charged to the deposit.
Can I bring a dog?
Only small pets may travel in a hire car, and they must stay in a travel carrier the whole time.
Can I drive on gravel roads?
No. The terms allow hire cars on paved public roads only.
